CANAL DESIGN

Details of Design Circle Organization
Now there is one Circle office nomanclated as Narmada Project Design Circle, Gandhinagar working under Chief Engineer (Design & QC) dealing with the design of Narmada Main Canal and Branch Canals headed by Superintending Engineer and 6 Units headed by Executive Engineer of which 5 are related to civil works & one Unit-C deals with Mechanical parts.

The distribution of work among the Executive Engineer (Unit Leader) is as under.

UNIT - A Design of Major structures on Main Canal and Combined Structures on
Branch canals:

This unit deals with the work of design of the major structures on Narmada Main Canal and combined structures like cross regulator with bridge, cross regulator with fall and bridge, cross regulator with canal siphon, cross regulators with canal falls and canal siphon etc of branch canal and sub branch.

This unit also deals with the proposal of Micro-Hydel Power Stations to generate energy at the location of the cross regulator combined with fall. Detail Project Report prepared by AHEC Roorkee for proposal to set up Micro Hydel Power Station at 10 different location of CR/Fall on Branch canals-7 on Miyagam branch canal and 3 on Saurashtra Branch Canal are scrutinized by this unit.

Status of work

(A) NARMADA MAIN CANAL

The Narmada Main Canal (NMC) would be 458 km. long up to Gujarat-Rajasthan border. Its capacity at the head would be 1133 cumecs (40,000 cusec) and will taper down to about 71 cumecs (2500 cusec) at the Gujarat-Rajasthan border. The cross section at its head is 73 m. (240 ft.) bed-width and 7.6 m. (25 ft.) full supply depth.

The canal in its journey up to Rajasthan border will traverse through regions with diverse agro-climatic and soil characteristics and crosses numerous streams and major rivers. In all 594 structures of various type viz. cross-drainage works, canal crossings, regulating and control structures, are proposed to be constructed along the main canal.

Phase-1 (NMC Ch.0 km. to 144.5 km.)

Narmada Main Canal works of Phase-1, i.e. from Main Head Regulator (Ch. 0.0km) to Mahi River Crossing (Ch. 144.5km) is completed. The canal is operative since October 2002. Total 13 structures in this reach are dealt by this unit. Out of 13 structures, six major structures are designed by consultant and scrutinized by this unit. The remaining all the structures are designed by this unit. The types of structures in this reach are different viz. Drainage culvert, Canal Syphon, Syphon Aqueduct, Aqueduct etc. The canal syphon and aqueduct are major structures in this reach.

* Consultant's Design

Phase-II (A) 144.50 km to 263.00 km

In this reach, all seven major siphon structures i.e. Canal Syphon structures are completed. The design of all the canal syphon structures is designed by this organization except Sabarmati Canal Syphon. Sabarmati canal siphon is designed by design unit of Central Water Commission (CWC), New Delhi. The design of this structure is carried out by exchanging the technical aspects among CWC and this Organization.

The details of these structures are as under:
