RELEVANT EVENTS PRIOR TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE TRIBUNAL
  • 1946
    The then Government of Central Provinces and Berar and the then Government of Bombay, made a request to Central Waterways, Irrigation and Navigation Commission (CWINC) to take up investigation on Narmada River for basinwise development of the river with flood control, irrigation, power and extension of navigation as general objectives.
  • 1948
    The Committee recommended as an initial step, detailed investigations for the following projects :
    (1) Bargi project
    (2) Tawa project
    (3) Punasa project (Predecessor of Narmada Sagar project)
    (4) Broach project (Predecessor of Navagam Project)
  • 1956
    1)Selection of site near village Gora for Broach project with a weir with pond level of 160 feet in the first stage and gross command area of 5.38 lakh ha. and preparation of Project report.
    2)Merger of erstwhile States of Saurashtra & Kachchh in the then Bombay State.
  • 1956
    Parliament passed two Acts relating to Inter-State rivers:
    (1) Inter-State Water Disputes Act, 1956 (Act: XXXIII of 1956); w.e.f. 28-08-56 (Article 262 of the Constitution)
    (2) River Boards Act, 1956, this Act has been a non-starter. According to the Annual Reports of the Ministry of Transportation and Power of the Government of India for the year 1961-62 and 1962-63, active steps were taken to form River Boards for Inter-State River Basins and, in August, 1963, Parliament by a supplementary grant, sanctioned funds for some of these Boards. Soon thereafter, the Central Government gave up the idea of setting up these Boards. (Act 49 of 1956) w.e.f. 12.09.1956 (Item 56 of list I of the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution).
